Italy: Two U.S students accuse police of rape

Florence: Two Carabinieri police men in the province of Florence who escorted two students home from a night club in the early hours of Thursday has been accused of rape by the students. The U.S state department said it was taking it seriously.
According to abcnews the Italian authorities said that the 21 year old students where questioned by prosecutors for hours about their allegations.
Italy has two major police forces that patrol its streets, the paramilitary which reports to the ministry of defense and Carabinieri which is under the interior ministry.
The defence minister said that the police men will immediately be suspended if the charges is lodge against them.
Minister Roberta Pinotti has said that rape is a very grave offence and especially if it is committed by men on uniform whom the citizen looked for forward to for protection. "Investigation is underway, but there is some basis in respect to the allegations.
Italian media reportedly said that three patrol cars went to a night club to investigate a fight, and two left after calm was restored but one remained. The women has said that the police drove them home and raped them.
News reports has also confirmed that they saw women enter the patrol car.
The Italian media ANSA reported that the US chief consul met with the Florence state police chief for an hour on Friday morning and the US Embassy in Rome have refused to comment on the matter due to the sensitivity of the matter and the individuals involved.
