Breaking News: Nigeria's ASUU to suspend industrial action

By Igboamalu Chimezie Nelson Nigerian university teachers have accepted the proposal of government but asked to be given until Tuesday for words on ending their strike. Biodun Ogunyemi, the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, stated this after the fifth open negotiation meeting with representatives of government, which lasted about four hours today. According to him, he said the government will hear from them within 24 hours. “Our members are waiting for us currently at the Labour House, so you will hear from us within 24 hours,” Mr. Ogunyemi said. “In the spirit of patriotism, we can work collectively for the improvement of the education sector,” he said.  The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said both parties had come to the end of deliberation on the matter.  “We have made lots of progress and agreed on the Union’s demands and we produced what we called ‘Collecti...

Nigeria: SSANU give details of why they boycotted the FG Negotiation

By Igboamalu Chimezie Nelson The senior academic staff union of Nigerian University did not attend its meeting scheduled for today with the Negotiators of the Federal government led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige based on its claim that it was not aware of the any meeting with the federal government. The organization which spoke through Abdussobur Salaam the National Public Relation officer said that they were never notified of any meeting with the federal government. SASSNU said it was ready to discuss with the government and avert any implications of the looming strike action, it argued that what was not made known to the organization could not be boycotted since they were not even aware.
