ASUU Will Embark on Strike If.....

The government had agreed with the  Union on the MoA before the last  industrial action was suspended  that it will implement its agreed contents before the end of October. Registration of the Nigerian University Pension Company NUPENCO  was part of the agreement which the government promised would be taken care of two weeks after the suspension of the strike action. However, the Federal Government has reportedly defaulted in honouring the agreement as it has not issued a license for the registration of the company. Meanwhile, government's failure to implement the agreement has stirred divided opinions among academics as some said they warned the union executive...

ASUP To Commence Indefinite Strike Next Week

Asup logo courtesy sheet.ng By Igboamalu Chimezie Nelson The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has disclosed that it will embark on strike with effect from November 13, 2017 to get register their grievances over the non implementation of its agreement with the government.  This followed an emergency meeting held on Monday in Abuja. The ASUP National President, Usman Dutse, said the union would commence an indefinite strike after the expiration of its earlier 21 days ultimatum. The ASUP leader who accused the government of using endless verification to delay the payment of entitlements of members of the union equally noted that the conciliatory meeting organised by the Federal Ministry of Labour yielded no result as the Ministry of Education was not interested in resolving the dispute. “Until now, it should be noted that the issues raised here today have been there since 2014 and none of them has since been concretely resolved to improve the sector.” The issues...

Tension flares over the dismissal of LASU-ASUU Chairman

LASU Gate By Igboamalu Chimezie Nelson Lagos: some Lecturers of the Lagos States University(LASU) has expressed their views in the dismissal of 15 academic staff of the university which also includes the chairman of the Lagos State University ASUU Chairman. The University council had on 8 of September dismissed 15 staffs including (ASUU) chairman and his deputy, and two Non-Academic staff with two others and also demoted two academic staff. The University claimed Oyewumi collected 50,000 Naira from 2003 modular students in political science education in a sandwich program in order to process their result. Adeyemi-Suenu was also accused of altering the results of 12 students who was asked to withdraw by the University senate in the 2015/2016 academic year. Others where found to have neglected their duties on the training leave bond. Nigeria: ASUU gives resumption date to staff

By Frank Justice Abuja: On the 18th of September 2017, by 3:00pm west African time, the ASUU's delegate met with the FGN. A memorandum of understanding was reached; this led to the call off of the ongoing strike action by ASUU as lecturers are told to resume duties as from 25th of  September 2017 . The chairman of the association professor Biodun ogunyemi said "We  pray for journey mercies for the students as they journey back to school. We are sorry for the strike, but our rights needed to be fought for. This is the only way our voice can be echoed. We apologise for whatever inconvenience it has caused. All tertiary institution is to resume back on Monday 25th of sept. "We are so grateful for the support of the schools under the oneness of this association" He said. The Minister of Labour and employment also reinstated that government is keen to abide by the agreement.

Breaking News: Nigeria's ASUU to suspend industrial action

By Igboamalu Chimezie Nelson Nigerian university teachers have accepted the proposal of government but asked to be given until Tuesday for words on ending their strike. Biodun Ogunyemi, the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, stated this after the fifth open negotiation meeting with representatives of government, which lasted about four hours today. According to him, he said the government will hear from them within 24 hours. “Our members are waiting for us currently at the Labour House, so you will hear from us within 24 hours,” Mr. Ogunyemi said. “In the spirit of patriotism, we can work collectively for the improvement of the education sector,” he said.  The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said both parties had come to the end of deliberation on the matter.  “We have made lots of progress and agreed on the Union’s demands and we produced what we called ‘Collecti...

By Igboamalu Chimezie Nelson The senior academic staff union of Nigerian University did not attend its meeting scheduled for today with the Negotiators of the Federal government led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige based on its claim that it was not aware of the any meeting with the federal government. The organization which spoke through Abdussobur Salaam the National Public Relation officer said that they were never notified of any meeting with the federal government. SASSNU said it was ready to discuss with the government and avert any implications of the looming strike action, it argued that what was not made known to the organization could not be boycotted since they were not even aware. By Frank Justice Abuja: The President of ASUU Prof Biodun Ogunyemi today told press men that the government and ASUU has reached an agreement and will get back to their members in the University to discuss and reach a concession as to weather or not it will accept the N220 billion the government is proposing in a round table early this morning. The government bowed to some of the union's demand with a very considerable proposals which the union seemed to be satisfied with during the negotiations in Abuja on Friday. The government came to a concession of honoring the 2009 agreement government had with ASUU, by releasing N220 billion before October this year to fund the revitalization of Federal universities in the country. Nigeria: ASUU to meet with FG for final concessions

By Frank Justice Abuja: There are indications that the Federal government may meet with academic staff union of Universities over the ongoing industrial action by the Union which have stagnated tertiary education in the country. The Union had met over the weekend to decide if the proposal by the federal government merits calling off the action. The federal government had proposed to pay twenty three billion Naira (#23b) to ASUU with a monthly payment of 1.5billion Naira pending on the forensic financial investigation that is presently on going by the ministry of finance. According to our correspondent in University of Abuja, ASUU had met on Saturday to decide weather it will call off the action based on the offers of the federal government.
