Students in Maiduguri Decries withholding of WAEC and NECO exams

By Emmanuel Okafor

Students of public secondary school in Borno state have expressed their dissatisfaction with WAEC and NECO withholding their results for June/July 2017 due to the inability of the state government to foot their outstanding fees.

The state government has pledged to pay 75 percent of their fees while the students are to pay 25 percent.

Some of the students have described the situation as rather unfortunate and disturbing.

Jidda Mustafa, a student of Government College Maiduguri, said that he could not apply for entry into any institution of higher learning due to the results NECO is yet to release. He further said that this trend will make him unable to secure admission this academic year.

To make matters worse, fellow students who attend private schools are making progress with their own admissions into private universities whereas their public schools counterparts are in this quagmire.

A student of Government Girls College Maiduguri, Fati Abubakar was also of the opinion that government should pay the examination fees to assist them with furtherance of their education.

The Vice Chairman of National Association of Nigerian Students, (NANS) Mr Shittima Umar decried the with holding of the the NECO and SSCE results in the state.

"Urgent measures are necessary to save the situation and assist the students to apply for admission into institution of learning." Umar said.

The NECO state officer Mr Ahmed Ma'aji  also confirm that the agency had withheld the result and explained that the action was necessary because of the inability state ministry of Education to complete payment of its candidates examination fees.

"The ministry only paid part of the total cost of the examination fees candidates can only access their results once the payment of the outstanding balance has being paid.

" The examination fees are 11,350 Naira per candidate" he said.

He also explained that 29,000 students sat for the exams in the state.

The permanent secretary from the ministry of education  Alhaji Hassan Aminami, said that the state government and the candidates has paid 75 percent but the government will soon pay for the remaining 25percent.

Animani also said that the ministry is presently working on the 25percent balance and will soon be paid.
